Leadership Philosophy: Servant Leader

Every person has the potential to be a leader. It is a malleable quality that is embedded within everyone. It is a quality that you go on a journey to find. It is a skill that needs to be fostered, nurtured, and constantly growing. Everyone has their own unique leadership style and anyone can be a leader as long as they engage in their passions and extend them to others around others. Leadership is a culmination of various merits that are only unique to the individual who practices and continues to practice it over time.
My view of leadership has changed through the years. In the beginning, I had my own selfish views. I wanted the title, and the benefits that came along with the position. I thought of leadership as a single person taking charge to create a strong community impact and this was the only way to become a leader. However, I came to realize that a leader cannot lead without the people they are leading. A leader is as strong as the weakest person on the time. A leader needs to a servant leader. True leadership is someone who serves others.
In the future, I envision being a leader in my everyday life. After I graduate I will be teaching secondary science in New Mexico, a low income community, where I will be a leader in my classroom. I aspire to lead my students down the right path and help students reach their full potential. This may be by narrowing the achievement gap or encouraging students to follow their own passions. Leaders are necessary for a brighter future. As a leader, I serve by helping others realize their own leadership potentials. My belief in servant leadership and my passion for low income communities will allow me to maintain altruistic motivations in my future career, and really make a difference in people's lives.
